James
Fouldes
(Born 4th October 1840 - Died April/May/June 1913)
The birth date is exact
as I have a copy of the birth cerificate. He was born in Southwell (in Nottinghamshire).
The death date is a rough one from a public register that says he died in
the district of Sheffield aged 72.
The age, which working from the birth date which I know to be true, confirms
this is the correct James.
The following is from the notes by James Fouldes (husband of Kathleen Lawson):
"My Great Grandfather.
His birth certificate was registered by Mary his mother who "made her
mark" (i.e. could not write) and omitted the "E".
He married Sarah Gibson on 27th June 1861. Note that he wrote his name but
Sarah made her mark.
Note also, James was a Wheelwright like his father John before him.
My Uncle Frank could tell
me little about James. He remembered him only from being a lad - probably
1900.
But from then on, my Uncle remembers well enough the drunken ways of James
who would roll home from the pub pretty drunk
with a fowl or duck slung across his shoulders. Once he fell through a plate
glass window!! In later life, he became a roamer.
My grandmother Julia would not have him in the house and if she found him
there, he was quickly chased out.
Sarah was very different.
My Uncle remembers her as a "real lady",
immensely house proud and she used to wrap stockings round table and chair
legs as protection against the grandchildren
-
probably James also! She was tallish and very trim. They lived at Hollis Croft
in those days.
An interesting point about
James is that you will see he became a Carpenter in later life
- not really so far from a Wheelwright because wheels were then made of wood.
He helped in building the University of Sheffield - that, according to my
Uncle, is when he became a Carpenter."
Just to add to these notes James lived at 21 Hollis Croft in Sheffield according
to the 1891 Census.
He was listed as a Wheelwright and was aged 50. His wife Sarah was 52 and
they all lived with their sons George
(a 19 year old hairdressers assistant) and Samuel (a 16 year old Umbrella
Maker's assistant).
Also living with them was their nephew Henry Fouldes who was a 24 year old
general labourer
(oddly Henry was marked as their 4 year old son in the 1871 Census).
