Irene Kathleen
Fouldes (Hardy)
(Born
April 16th 1914 - Died 27th March 1993)
My Nan was a wonderful woman. A Sheffield born woman I know she had a difficult childhood.
I know she met Grandad
through a blind date that was set up. They were married for about 56 years
- I remember being around for their Golden Wedding.
She used to have
a go at poor Grandad though and, as a child, I'm afraid I became aware of
this and used to wind Grandad up secretly just to see Nan have a go at him!!
Poor Grandad!
She was like a surrogate mother to me for a while after my parents split up.
A wonderful cook (I wish I had her recipe for "Ash" - something
she called this stew type thing she made with potato's carrots and onions
- it was LOVELY!) and very chatty! I think it's where I get my "Gift
of the Gab" from!
She had back trouble and poor legs for any years due to an incident when she
was younger. I think a horse that was chained up bolted near where she was
walking one time and her legs got wrapped in its' chains and badly injured.
Her legs never properly recovered from that.
I know she was a one for collecting clutter - something I am prone to do as well! Well, you never know when it will come in handy!!!
Near the end she went
downhill and her mind went a bit - this all happened very suddenly and wasn't
drawn out - thankfully.
She died at the Pilgrim Hospital in Boston, Lincolnshire. Her grave is in
Pinchbeck, next to my Grandad's in Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire where they both
had lived for the last few decades.
